I learned a new word reading today’s selection, a poem and picture book for very young children, Christmas Carol by Sara Teasdale. The word was chrysoprase—it’s an apple green gemstone that is supposed to promote joy and happiness, while healing depression and anxiety and attracting love, abundance, and prosperity. I could use that.

Anyway, in this poem, the three kings brought chrysoprase to the baby Jesus. Another group seeking the baby was wise men from the East. Curious. I thought the kings and wise men were one and the same.

Dale Gottlieb’s charming illustrations made the book worthwhile, but it probably won’t make it onto next year’s Advent reading list.
