You probably won’t be surprised that Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas landed on my Advent reading list. However, it might surprise you to learn that I had never before read this classic children’s story. That’s because I never had children to read it to. I have also never seen the movie, so I had no idea what the story was, which was delightful. The drawings and rhymes are charming and fun, but the story also carries a deeper meaning.

As we rush around buying and wrapping gifts, baking goodies, and decorating our houses, we may forget that Christmas isn’t about the “presents! The Ribbons!, The wrappings! The tags! And the tinsel! The trimmings! The trappings!” Maybe we could all use a gentle reminder from the Grinch. “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas . . . perhaps . . . means a little bit more!”
